SINERGIE-SIMA 2020 ONLINE SYMPOSIUM: ACADEMICS AND MANAGERS DISCUSS TODAY’S GRAND CHALLENGES ON 7-8 SEPTEMBER 2020

Titled “Grand Challenges. Company and University working for a better society”, the Sinergie - SIMA conference 2020 will be held virtually September 7-8, 2020, due to the Covid-19-related restrictions. In partnership with the University of Pisa Department of Economics and Management and the Sant’Anna School Institute of Management, the “Grand Challenges. Company and University working for a better society” conference will be streamed online at https://www.youtube.com/c/mediaeventiunipi/live,  beginning on Sept. 7, 2020, at 9.00 am.

Addressing the global sustainability themes with a special focus on sustainable development and human rights, business and academia will consider social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability at the national and regional level.

Italian enterprises and industries move towards national development and a more sustainable economy, society and environment. Business case studies in sustainability best practices will show how businesses have adopted sustainability strategies and corporate social responsibility to achieve a balance in social development, environmental protection, and economic growth. In particular, on Monday, September 7, at 2.00 pm, Sant’Anna School professor Marco Frey will serve as a moderator for the panel of experts Paola Signori (University of Verona), Claudio Pinassi (KME), Giuseppe Sardu (Acque Spa), Roberto Lacorte (Pharmanutra), Maurizio Barsacchi (Conad), presenting perspectives and emerging issues relevant to implementation of corporate responsibility in Tuscany. The case studies will highlight how managers define and prioritize their sustainability agenda in achieving social responsibility and competitive advantage.

Paolo Mancarella, rector of the University of Pisa, Sabina Nuti, rector of Sant’Anna School, Sandro Castaldo, president of SIMA and Nic Beech, president of the British Academy of Management, will give their opening remarks on Monday, September 7 at 11.30 am.

On September 8, at 9.00 am, Sant’Anna School professor Andrea Piccaluga will serve as a moderator for the session on Innovazione e costruzione del bene comuneThe session will provide a platform for a panel of experts from a range of sectors to present the positive impact of integrated sustainability in our environment, society, and economy.

Beyond compliance of the law, experts and internationally renowned keynote speakers including  Mette Morsing (Copenhagen Business School), and  Philip Shapira (Alliance Manchester Business School) will discuss (on Monday at noon) governance issues and more equitable access to business opportunities.

Ans Kolk (Amsterdam Business School) and Andrew Crane (Bath University) will discuss (on Tuesday at 3.00 pm) international business research and modern slavery. 

On September 8, at 2.00 pm, Francesco Ciampi (University of Florence), Mauro Sylos Labini (University of Pisa), Anna Severin (Swiss National Science Foundation) and Graziella Bertocchi (University of  Modena and Reggio Emilia) will address research integrity issues and financial sustainability  in open access publishing demonstrating the significant risk of “predatory journals” and the interference undermining scientific consensus.

Additional sessions in Italian will discuss the need for sustainable (higher) education to have ethical responsibilities in addressing Consumo consapevole e cittadinanzaSistemi locali e ecosistemi basati alla conoscenzaImprenditoria sociale e organizzazioni ibrideManagement e finanza responsabileUniversità tra produzione e propagazione dei saperi. Education is identified as a key element of sustainability-focused strategies also in referring to the fair dissemination of knowledge, skills and values within communities and nations.

Dedicated sessions debating the Management nella fase post-Covid will go in parallel on September 7, at 3.30 pm and on September 8, at 9.00 am.

Elisa Giuliani (University of Pisa), Marco Frey (Sant’Anna School), Daniele Dalli (University of Pisa) and Andrea Piccaluga (Sant’Anna School) will deliver the closing remarks.
